The How-To Page

This page is sort of like a help page. For those that are new to the blog, or blogs in general, this hopefully can answer some FAQs. If you have a question about the blog that is not answered here, please send it to me at bakedalaskan82@gmail.com and I will try to respond as soon as I can.

Q.) Why is the arrangement different on my mobile device than my computer?

A.) The mobile format is designed for easy reading and navigation with as few steps as possible. To avoid clutter, only the Blog title, the post menu, blog posts themselves, and a few navigation buttons show. You can still access everything on the blog however by scrolling to the bottom of the feed, below the Home button, and clicking on the View Web Version icon. This will change the format to the same as shows on the computer, including the sidebar. On most tablets, the format is the same as the desktop view, just oriented to your screen either vertically or horizontally.

Q.) How do I subscribe and what does this mean?

A.) There are currently two ways to subscribe to hide-n-(sensory)-seeking, through email, or RSS feed.

Subscribing by email means that each time I publish a post, you will receive an email containing the post. You can read the post right from your email, but the format is different than on the blog itself, so the pictures may be larger and harder to see. Also, you cannot leave a comment while in your email. To comment on a post, click on the title of the post, it is a direct link back to the post on the blog, and scroll to the bottom to comment. To sign up for this option, make sure you are in the Web Version, and on the right side, in the sidebar, is a box that says Get New Posts By Email. Enter your email address in the box, and then click the Submit button. Then follow the directions in the window that pops up. You will only receive an email when a new post has been published. No new post, no email. Your email address is never shared. And it is not used for any advertising. It is completely free, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Subscribing by RSS is a convenient option if you follow several blogs or news outlets with an RSS feed. RSS stands for Rich Site Summary, but is sometimes dubbed Really Simple Syndication. It brings all the posts together in one place for you to just read through, much like an internet In Box, instead of having to visit each site individually. In order to make use of this option, you need to first sign up with an RSS Feed Reader. There are many free ones to choose from, and a quick internet search will reveal plenty of reviews to help you selected one. To subscribe this way, first make sure you are in the Web Version. Next, look to the right, in the side bar, to the box labeled Subscribe by RSS, and click on the button that says Posts.

To all my readers who visit the blog directly, or subscribe by either means, thank you so so much!

Q.) How do I search for a post or subject?

A.) First make sure you are in the Web Version. Next, look all the way to the right in the sidebar. Scroll down below the Blog Archive, and you will see a box titled Search! Enter the post title, label, or subject you are looking for, then click the button that says Search. Tabs linked to any post containing the search words will appear listed chronologically. Scroll through the tabs and click on the desired post to read the contents.

Q.) Why can't I comment? I get it all typed and then try to submit it, but nothing happens!

A.) This usually happens when readers are using a mobile device that is not set to accept cookies. Cookies are small information files that allow websites to work more efficiently for each user. Sometimes they store certain information so that you do not have to be prompted to log in repeatedly if you frequent a certain site. They can also be used to help advertisers specify their ads to your preferences. On Blogger, they must be enabled in order to leave a comment.

Cookies are enabled through your web browser, like Google Chrome, Safari, or Internet Explorer. Each device is a little different when it comes to changing the settings, so if you are not sure how on your device, I suggest looking up "How to enable cookies on my _________" then enter your device name, into your search engine. Or ask a tech savvy friend to help you out!

Q.) Why do certain posts have key words below them down by your name?

A.) These are called Labels, and they make it easier to search for other posts with similar themes! If you click on one, it will bring up all other posts with the same label in chronological order from most recent to oldest. These are also helpful for individuals searching for certain things using search engines, as these posts will come up in the results of their search.

Q.) Do you delete comments?

A.) I love comments! I appreciate all who take the time to read my blog and post comments. I am open minded and welcome others viewpoints even if they differ from mine. However, I do have a few rules.

  1. No foul language. There are hundreds of thousands of words that can be used to clearly describe how we think and feel, there are only a few dozen that are viewed as crude, derogatory, or overly explicit, choose respectfully please.
  2. I will not tolerate comments that are demeaning or condemnatory to any one or group of individuals, including myself. Especially, when these are submitted anonymously.
  3. No comments that are clearly spam.

These are the only types of comments I delete, and thankfully have not had to very often. Otherwise, I welcome any and all comments and try to respond if I possibly can!

I hope this information helps your visits here to be fun and informative!

Thanks so much for reading!!

Le Petite Chef: Mud Pie

Here it is, as promised, Grace's Mud Pie recipe! She did all the work, I helped explain terms and measurements, stirred at the very end to make sure everything was evenly coated (at her request), and helped hold the pot. She let one of her friends spread the Nutella and add the "dirt" to one of the pies while she did the other.  This is a very kid friendly recipe, I highly recommend it for ages 8 and up! The original recipe is in the book The Cooking Book, by Jane Bull. But we modified it just a bit. Here are our supplies: 3/4 c butter 1 tbsp cocoa powder 1/2 c sugar 1 c graham cracker crumbs 1/2 c dried fruit 1 chocolate bar (we used Nutella spread instead) We added: Heath chocolate and toffee bits Black Sixletts (found in the party aisle) These are the original measurements, we doubled the recipe though. Step 1: Crush graham crackers. We used a gallon size zipper bag and a coffee mug (I don't own

Preschool at Home! Chalkboard Painting

Here is another treasure from the backfiles. This started as an act of desperation on my part, I just needed her to be occupied so I could finish something, but it quickly became one of her favorite activities. If you have a chalkboard (we made ours on a half wall with chalkboard paint), all you need is a paintbrush, sponge, or washcloth, and a cup of water. Dip the brush in the water and have at it! Kit LOVES how the water turns the board black. So often, she will be at this so long that by the time she gets across the board, the first area she painted will be dry and a fresh pallet once again. You can get creative with the things you use as paintbrushes, but she has been completely happy with our basic art brushes from Walmart. I love watching her do this.

A Year in the Secret Garden - Tea Party, Book Review, and $100 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway!

We are still buzzing with excitement from this weekend. Our house was transformed Saturday afternoon into a dazzling venue for our Mid-Summer Indoor Garden Tea Party in November.  Confused?  No worries. I'll explain. First, allow me introduce an amazing book: A Year in the Secret Garden by Valarie Budayr & Marilyn Scott-Waters I recieved a beautiful paperback copy for review, but otherwise I have recieved no compensation. All thoughts and opinions of the book are entirely my own. Inspired by and written as sort of a companion and activity guide for The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this book is divided into twelve month sections. Each month highlights traditional activities, recipes, life in that era, and a character study. It is a wonderful, hands on, practical way to take kids on a journey back in time and see how children and families lived in another era. The illustrations are colorful and whimsical. The photographs
