Le Petite Chef: Egg Salad

Grace loves egg salad. Really loves it, as in she would eat it every day most likely. So it was no real surprise that one of the things she wanted to learn to make during our cooking sessions together was egg salad. So that is what we did. There are about as many ways to do egg salad as there are condiments and spices and herbs in the world. So there is endless variety when it comes to flavor, which I happen to think is awesome. This is our basic recipe. Supplies:  Eggs Mayo Mustard Step One: Grace filled a saucepan a little over halfway with water and then gently set the eggs in the pan. Make sure there is enough water to cover the eggs with a little room to spare. Put the pan on High heat, we want the water to boil. When the water reaches a boil, turn off burner. Let eggs sit in the hot water for 8-10 minutes. Step two: While the eggs rest in the hot water, fill a medium bowl with ice and just enough water to come to the top layer of ice....

Indoor S'mores

Hi everyone. Sorry about just sort of dropping out of the blogosphere for a while there. I don't want to go into the details of the last month, suffice it to say I've been bled of all energy and the demands for it have only multiplied. Blegh! So I had to let things go in order to better focus my energies on the things of highest priority, my family. That included blogging for a while. I hope to get back to it it more regularly soon, but for today, here is a recipe that I originally found on Pinterest, but tweaked, and I think improved. We call them Indoor S'mores, and they are amazing! Here are the ingredients: Non-stick Muffin Tin Ready to bake Sugar or Snickerdoodle cookies. We prefer the Snickerdoodle. A package of these contains 24 cookies, so you could either make just a few, or the whole batch if desired. Nutella Marshmallows , little or regular size both work. I've used both and I prefer the large ones as they stay in the middle of ...

Le Petite Chef: Mud Pie

Here it is, as promised, Grace's Mud Pie recipe! She did all the work, I helped explain terms and measurements, stirred at the very end to make sure everything was evenly coated (at her request), and helped hold the pot. She let one of her friends spread the Nutella and add the "dirt" to one of the pies while she did the other.  This is a very kid friendly recipe, I highly recommend it for ages 8 and up! The original recipe is in the book The Cooking Book, by Jane Bull. But we modified it just a bit. Here are our supplies: 3/4 c butter 1 tbsp cocoa powder 1/2 c sugar 1 c graham cracker crumbs 1/2 c dried fruit 1 chocolate bar (we used Nutella spread instead) We added: Heath chocolate and toffee bits Black Sixletts (found in the party aisle) These are the original measurements, we doubled the recipe though. Step 1: Crush graham crackers. We used a gallon size zipper bag and a coffee mug (I don't own ...

Le Petite Gourmet

This post is over a week late because of technical malfunctions. Nevertheless, it was a fun morning and the food was delicious! This week on Le Petite Gourmet :   Breakfast Biscuits with Bacon and Cheese     Okay, last Monday night my children conspired against me, I think, in order to ensure that I did not sleep a wink all night! One after the other kept waking and needing things, ALL NIGHT!!! By six in the morning, I had two girls in my bed and the knowledge that at this point, all my chances of any real sleep were gone. So I got up.   A little while later, Grace followed me, unable to sleep because her allergies were really bothering her. I told her that since we were both up when we didn't want to be, we should at least have something delicious to eat for breakfast! And so she and I made a yummy, but very simple breakfast, while we enjoyed the sunrise together.   When it was ready, we woke Daddy and Zak and asked if they ...

Le Petit Gourmet

Welcome to my new feature, Le Petit Gourmet , starring Grace , one of our resident foodies and aspiring chef. Grace loves to help in the kitchen, she asks frequently to pour, stir, and her favorite, taste test. So in my efforts to help her find her groove, I am acting on one of my goals to really get her more involved in cooking. We can't do this for every meal, sometimes things are just too chaotic, or rushed. But some evenings are much more laid back, especially if Kit had a decent nap in the afternoon. So my goal is to have at least one cooking project a week in which Grace is involved almost in every step. Then she can continue to help with the other meals as life permits. This by no means leaves out Zak. Zak spends a lot of time in the kitchen as well. In fact he makes a mean batch of mac-n-cheese with only us on stand-by these days. And eventually, we plan to assign him one night a week that is his night to cook. So he is getting a well rounded kitchen education. B...
